Building on the thirty years that they have worked together in the work of antiracism, Regina Shands Stoltzfus and Tobin Miller Shearer will draw on the deep spiritual traditions of the world’s religions to connect spiritual formation with racial identity. Integrating personal stories, reflections on antiracist spirituality, and input on issues of racialized internalization, the seminar will also include input on resiliency, whiteness, and sustainable work across racial lines. Designed for those who have been at the work of dismantling racism for years or those who have just begun, the class will inspire and equip through focused reflection and discussion.

This course faces the challenge of antiracism work in the 21st century by acknowledging it will take more than our minds and sheer will to confront racist oppression. We make the case for nurturing a spiritual foundation in order to build the necessary components of resilience, authenticity, and community. Upon conclusion, students will be able to identify the components of their own antiracist spirituality, articulate an accountability statement, and create a roadmap of their own spiritual practices to nurture resilience for the long haul. Drawing on the common foundations of the world’s spiritual traditions, this course does not advocate a specific religious tradition but does make reference to instructors’ faith background.

Perhaps because Western culture is so identified with cognition, it seems surprising to learn that trauma therapy need not be led by the recall of past traumas or the body sensations associated with that recall. The focus on regulation and the “window of tolerance” has begun a different focus — b...
